Timeline
- c. 1519–1520Venice · VeniceBomberg, a Christian Hebrew printer from Antwerp, obtained permission from Pope Leo X to print the complete Babylonian Talmud in Venice, hiring rabbis and proofreaders, changing the previous situation of having only single-tractate editions.
- 1520–1523Venice · VeniceThe entire Babylonian Talmud was printed in about four years: each page centered on the Mishnah-Gemara text, with Rashi and Tosafot in inner and outer columns, and folio numbering running through the whole set. Citations of the Talmud thereafter pointed to the same leaf, and editions such as the Vilna edition followed this pagination.
- 1523–1549Venice · VeniceIn 1523 Bomberg also printed the first edition of the Jerusalem Talmud. The Venice editions spread through Mediterranean and European Jewish communities, making the unified folio numbering a common coordinate for cross-regional study and correspondence.
