Timeline

  1. 1051–1053Cordoba and the al-Andalus interior · al-AndalusAfter the caliphate's collapse, al-Andalus formed over twenty taifa polities, each with its own emir controlling cities and surrounding lands. By the early 1050s this fragmented structure was firmly established as the basic form of politics in southern Iberia.
  2. 1054–1058Cities of al-Andalus · al-AndalusIn the 1050s the taifas frequently fought over territory, trade routes, and suzerainty. Stronger taifas like Seville and Granada tried to absorb weaker neighbors, but lacking unified authority they fell into mutual exhaustion, unable to meet external pressure effectively.
  3. 1055–1060al-Andalus–Leon–Castile frontier · Iberian PeninsulaThe taifas commonly paid parias tribute to Christian monarchs such as Ferdinand I in exchange for military protection or to avoid invasion. This dependency further hardened the fragmented pattern and accelerated Muslim polities' subordination to northern powers.
