From 1250 to 1254 he personally experienced imprisonment and ransom negotiations in Egypt, recording Louis's religious vows and leadership under adversity; in May 1254 he was released with the king and returned to France, gathering first-hand material for his later Life of Saint Louis.

In the mid-to-late 1250s he maintained close contact with Louis IX, occasionally travelling to Paris on pilgrimage; his 1250s Egyptian experiences became the basis for later telling Louis's grandchildren and compiling the Life of Saint Louis.
