Timeline

  1. 1550–1554Hanseatic trading house in Burgos · CastileIn the early 1550s, the Casa de los Hansa in Burgos continued as a transshipment and settlement center for Castilian wool exports; Hanseatic merchants purchased wool for shipment to the Low Countries and England while importing Northern European timber, fish, and manufactured goods. The kontor enjoyed long-standing chartered status and maintained its own court and warehouses.
  2. 1555–1557Castilian inland trade route · CastileAround Charles V's abdication, imperial fiscal and tariff policies were adjusted, and the Seville–Antwerp Atlantic trade route competed with Burgos's inland wool route. The Hanseatic kontor had to compete with native Spanish merchants and English adventurer companies for wool contracts and credit.
  3. 1558–1559Burgos · CastileAfter Philip II's accession strengthened fiscal control over the peninsula, the Burgos kontor was still operating by the late 1550s, but the Hanse's overall influence in Iberia continued to wane. The kontor became a typical example of the old-style inland trading house coexisting with the emerging Atlantic port economy of the 1550s.
