Timeline
- 1221Xuande (present-day Xuanhua, Hebei) · HebeiIn 1221 Muqali, as Grand Marshal for the war against Jin, continued pressing south, dividing his forces to take Xuande, Deshun and other cities, and sending a detachment into Shandong, consolidating Mongol control along the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains and northern Hebei, maintaining sustained pressure on the Jin dynasty while Genghis Khan's main force campaigned west against Khwarazm.
- 1222Xingzhou (around present-day Dingxing, Hebei) · HebeiIn 1222 Muqali captured Xingzhou, further compressing the Jin defensive line in Hebei. By then he was worn down by illness, yet he still personally directed the armies, coordinating with Han Chinese commanders such as the myriad-commander Shi Tian'ni, steadily expanding the Mongol-occupied zone in the northern Central Plains.
- 1223In the army (Hebei) · HebeiIn 1223 Muqali died of illness in the army on the Jin front; his son Botu succeeded to command of his troops. Genghis Khan mourned upon hearing of his death and posthumously granted him the title Zhongwu. Muqali's campaigns in North China from 1221 to 1223 provided the strategic foundation for Ögedei and Tolui to continue the destruction of Jin.
