1. 1021–1022Bianjing (Eastern Capital, Kaifeng Prefecture) · Kaifeng CityZhenzong was often ill in his later years yet still handled military and state affairs at Bianjing; after January of the first year of Qianxing (1022) his condition worsened, and he died in March. His edict ordered Liu E and Crown Prince Zhao Zhen (Renzong) to govern jointly, laying the foundation for Renzong's accession and Liu E's regency behind the curtain.
