Timeline

  1. 1451–1456Beijing · ChinaAfter the Tumu Crisis of 1449, Emperor Yingzong (Zhu Qizhen) was captured by the Oirats. Minister of War Yu Qian supported the accession of the Jingtai Emperor (Zhu Qiyu) and organized the defense of Beijing, successfully repelling the invasion. In 1451 the empire entered a stable period of Jingtai governance: the court reorganized northern defenses, carried out military reforms, repaired Great Wall fortifications, and the Jingtai Emperor designated his own son Zhu Jianji as crown prince (1452), demonstrating an intent to consolidate imperial authority; under Yu Qian's leadership the government was relatively upright.
  2. 1450–1456Forbidden City, Beijing · ChinaEmperor Yingzong (Zhu Qizhen) was released by the Oirats through negotiations in 1450 and lived in the Southern Palace as 'Grand Emperor', politically sidelined. The Jingtai Emperor deposed Yingzong's son Zhu Jianshen as crown prince and installed his own son instead; however Zhu Jianji died young, leaving the succession issue unresolved and planting hidden dangers within the court. The empire appeared stable on the surface, but deep disputes over the legitimacy of the imperial line continued to accumulate.
  3. 1457–1460Forbidden City, Beijing · ChinaIn 1457, during the Jingtai Emperor's grave illness, generals Shi Heng and Cao Jixiang launched the Gate-Seizing Coup at night, restoring Emperor Yingzong to the throne under the era name Tianshun. The Jingtai Emperor was promptly deposed and soon died; Yu Qian, who had strongly advocated resistance, was executed on the charge of 'intending to install an outside prince', and the war party at court was purged. The Tianshun reign governed conservatively; by 1460 the empire maintained a defensive posture on the northern frontier, with internal politics stabilizing but innovative spirit suppressed.
