Timeline
- 1140–1149Damascus · DamascusAround 1140, Ataki inherited the Burid throne of Damascus, but civil and military affairs were handled entirely by atabeg Mu'in al-Din Unur. Thanks to Unur's shrewd diplomacy, Damascus came through the siege of the Second Crusade in 1148 unharmed, while Ataki held only a symbolic position.
- 1149–1154Damascus · DamascusAfter Unur's death in 1149, Ataki had to face Nur al-Din Zengi's tightening encirclement alone. Lacking strong military and political support, Damascus's great families and military forces successively defected to Nur al-Din. In 1154, with Nur al-Din's army at the gates, Ataki was forced to cede Damascus in exchange for leaving by negotiation, ending the Burid dynasty. Ataki's subsequent fate is unclear in the sources.
