Timeline
- 1516Buda Castle · HungaryVladislaus II died in Buda, just two weeks short of his sixtieth birthday. On his deathbed he summoned bishop Tamás Bakócz, noble John Bornemisza, and his nephew Georg, margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, to entrust them with the guardianship of the young Louis II.
- 1516Székesfehérvár · Fejér CountyThe king's funeral was held at Székesfehérvár Cathedral, the burial place of Hungarian monarchs. Louis II had already received the Hungarian crown in 1508 and the Bohemian crown in 1509, so the succession proceeded smoothly, but the teenage king was in practice governed by a noble regency.
- 1516Hungary-Bohemia · Central EuropeVladislaus II left behind a heavily indebted kingdom with an ascendant nobility. The 1515 Treaty of Vienna had already arranged Habsburg-Jagiellonian dynastic marriages and succession; his death further tipped the Central European balance of power toward the Habsburgs, and the Jagiellonian dynasty entered its final decade.
