According to Ibn Battuta and Ibn Khaldun, Sulayman may have seized the throne from Maghan, and Jata went into exile in the Burun region. During Sulayman's reign (1341–1360) he was politically marginalized but retained his royal qualification to contest the throne.

Jata won the civil war and consolidated power in late 1360, becoming the new mansa, marking the continuation of the succession crisis after Sulayman's era.
- 1360–1361Fez · FezSulayman had prepared a diplomatic embassy to the Marinid sultan before his death but did not live to send it. After Jata took the throne, he added gifts (including a giraffe) to the embassy assembled at Walata and dispatched it to Fez. The embassy arrived in late 1360 or early 1361, was received by Sultan Abu Salim Ibrahim, and caused a sensation in Morocco.

In his later years he suffered from lethargy and was long unable to govern; he died around 1373–1374 and was succeeded by his son Musa II.
