Timeline

  1. 1250–1261Devagiri · MaharashtraDuring Krishna's reign, Mahadeva was designated crown prince from at least 1250 and took part in governance. Because Krishna's son Ramachandra was young or unborn, Mahadeva effectively bore the burden of assisting in rule, laying the foundation for his later accession.
  2. 1261–1265Devagiri · MaharashtraMahadeva succeeded after Krishna's death c.1261. In his early years he sent armies to defeat Someshvara, ruler of Tanasaurahara, and suppressed a Kadamba vassal rebellion. Ministers such as Chancellor Taparasa and Hemadri served at his court; Hemadri composed works including the Prayashchitta-kanda during this period.
  3. 1261–1270Deccan · Deccan PlateauIn the 1260s Mahadeva invaded the Kakatiyas and Hoysalas. Around 1266 he campaigned against Hoysala king Narasimha II, penetrating his territory but ultimately being repelled; the Kakatiya invasion was also countered by forces under Queen Rudrama. Around 1268 general Balideva suppressed a Kadamba rebellion. These campaigns alternated in success and failed to fundamentally alter the balance of power in the south.
