Timeline

  1. c. 1340–1370Sangamagrama · KeralaMadhava was born at Sangamagrama and received training in mathematics and astronomy within the Sanskrit scholarly tradition of South India. Between 1360 and 1370 he systematically studied trigonometry and the computation of π, beginning to explore methods of approximating function values by infinite series and laying the theoretical foundation for the Kerala school.
  2. 1371–1380Sangamagrama · KeralaBetween 1371 and 1380 Madhava completed a series of infinite series formulas for sine, cosine, tangent, and π, achieving precision far beyond contemporary European levels. His works were largely transmitted in Sanskrit verse, and some results were later annotated and disseminated by disciples such as Parameshvara.
  3. 1381–1425Kerala · KeralaAfter the 1380s Madhava continued teaching in South India, training successor scholars including Parameshvara. His infinite series methods were transmitted through the school to Nilakantha Somayaji and others, forming an important chapter in the history of Indian mathematics; he died around 1425.
