Timeline

  1. c. 1040–1090Beauvais · PicardyIvo studied theology and dialectic under Lanfranc at the Abbey of Bec, then went to Beauvais in France as abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Quentin-en-l'Isle, where he devoted himself to studying canon law texts, collecting papal decretals, conciliar statutes, and patristic writings, accumulating rich material for his later great compilations of canon law.
  2. 1090–1115Chartres · Centre-Val de LoireIvo was appointed bishop of Chartres around 1090 and held the see until his death in 1115. During this period he completed three important works of canon law: the Tripartita, the Decretum (about 3,741 canons), and the more concise Panormia (about 1,038 canons). These works circulated widely and became the most influential canon law references of the 12th century, directly inspiring Gratian's Decretum. In the Investiture Controversy he proposed resolving the conflict between pope and king of France by distinguishing spiritual from secular authorization, making him an important spokesman of the conciliatory camp.
