Timeline

  1. c. 1070–1113Jerusalem · PalestineThe Order originated in a hospital in Jerusalem serving Latin pilgrims, with pioneers such as Gerard directing charitable relief. In 1113 it received papal recognition as a religious order, its purpose combining care for poor and sick pilgrims with monastic life, laying the organizational foundation for its later militarization.
  2. c. 1130–1291Levant (around Jerusalem–Acre–Tripoli) · LevantFrom the 12th century the Order took on military defensive functions, receiving grants of land and castles. It garrisoned fortresses such as Krak des Chevaliers and Margat, standing alongside the Knights Templar as a main force of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. After the fall of Acre in 1291, the Order withdrew from the Levant and took temporary refuge in Cyprus.
  3. 1309–1798Rhodes–Malta · MaltaThe Order used Rhodes as a base to resist the Ottoman navy; after losing Rhodes in 1522, it was granted Malta by Spain in 1530. During the Malta period it developed into a powerful maritime empire-like religious order, participating in campaigns such as the Great Siege of 1565, until the French occupation of 1798 ended the era of the sovereign military order.
  4. 1798Rome (current headquarters) · RomeAfter losing Malta, the Order moved to Rome and continues as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, mainly engaged in medical charity and humanitarian relief. Its medieval Levantine military-fortress functions have been transformed, but its organizational lineage and hospital tradition continue unbroken, influencing the practice of modern international humanitarian institutions.
