Timeline
- 1590–1594Eastern and northern Holland · Netherlands (country)Stadholder Maurice, Prince of Orange, joined the States of Holland and Zeeland, using engineer flanking and swift sieges to recapture Breda (1590), Zutphen (1591), and 's-Hertogenbosch (1593). His 'Dutch method of fortification,' combining bastions and water lines, made Spanish relief difficult and greatly expanded northern territory.
- 1594–1597Groningen · Netherlands (country)The fall of Groningen in 1594 marked the expulsion of Spanish power from the north's last major city. Maurice then pushed east, capturing Rheinberg and other fortresses in 1597; the Republic's effective territory was largely fixed, with Spain holding only the southern Netherlands and some border forts.
- 1598–1599Brussels · BelgiumPhilip II granted the Spanish Netherlands to his daughter Infanta Isabella and her husband Archduke Albert as co-rulers. The new regents reformed southern finances and the army and launched a counteroffensive in 1599 to recover lost ground, with both sides locked in border seesaw warfare. The war entered a north-south stalemate, creating conditions for the 1600 Battle of Nieuwpoort and subsequent truce negotiations.
