Timeline

  1. 1674–1675Electorate of Brandenburg · BrandenburgDuring the Franco-Dutch War, Sweden, at Louis XIV's request, invaded Brandenburg from Swedish Pomerania to force the Great Elector out of the anti-French camp. Carl Gustaf Wrangel was ill, and the front was actually commanded by Waldemar von Wrangel; supply difficulties forced the Swedes to disperse, allowing the Great Elector to force-march back from the Rhine to the rescue.
  2. 1675Fehrbellin · BrandenburgThe Great Elector and Marshal Derfflinger seized the high ground near Fehrbellin and bombarded the Swedish army, which was repairing bridges and preparing to withdraw east. The Swedish right wing covered the main force's river crossing before withdrawing; losses on both sides numbered in the hundreds, and it was not an annihilating battle, but the fact that Brandenburg had defeated a Swedish field army at home spread rapidly across Germany.
  3. 1675Fehrbellin · BrandenburgThe Great Elector publicized the limited victory as shattering the Swedish myth. The Empire, the Netherlands, and Denmark were encouraged; Christian V attacked Scania that autumn, and the Scanian War broke out in full. Brandenburg immediately counterattacked into Pomerania, and Prussia's image as a military state was thereby established.
