Timeline

  1. c. 1390–1403Gallipoli (Gelibolu) naval base · DardanellesThe Ottoman Empire established its first permanent naval base on the Gallipoli Peninsula, assembling a fleet centered on captured or purchased Greek and Genoese galleys, and recruiting shipwrights and sailors from along the Mediterranean coast. During this period the Ottoman galley fleet was used mainly to control the Bosphorus Strait, laying the foundation for the subsequent strategy of besieging Constantinople.
  2. 1451–1452Edirne and Gallipoli · ThraceAfter acceding in February 1451, Mehmed II immediately began preparations for the siege of Constantinople, ordering the urgent construction and assembly of galleys at the Gallipoli shipyards. By spring 1453 the Ottoman fleet had assembled about 120 galleys and auxiliary vessels, providing the naval blockade force for the siege.
  3. 1453Golden Horn, Constantinople · IstanbulOn April 22, 1453, Mehmed II ordered engineers to lay greased wooden rails from the Bosphorus shore to the Golden Horn, hauling about 70 galleys over the ridge of Galata in a single night, bypassing the barrier chain across the mouth of the Golden Horn and completing a historic strategic flanking maneuver. This left the Byzantine defenders attacked from front and rear, and the Golden Horn defense line collapsed. On May 29 Constantinople fell, ending the thousand-year Byzantine Empire. This overland maneuver of Ottoman galleys is listed by military historians as one of the most inventive tactical operations of medieval naval warfare.
  4. 1456–1460Aegean Sea and Peloponnese · Aegean SeaAfter the fall of Constantinople, the Ottoman galley fleet rapidly expanded its control of the Aegean: Athens was taken in 1456, the Peloponnese (Despotate of Morea) was conquered in 1458-1460, and Black Sea coastal ports were successively brought under Ottoman control. The Golden Horn was converted into the core naval base of the Ottoman Empire, large numbers of new kadırga warships were built, and the Ottomans became the undisputed maritime power of the eastern Mediterranean.
