Timeline

  1. 1623–1624St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican · VaticanThe new Pope Urban VIII appointed the young Bernini to build a monumental altar canopy directly beneath Michelangelo's dome, above St. Peter's tomb, to complete the liturgical center of the new basilica. The design used four giant spiral columns, echoing the Old Basilica's Solomonic column tradition, and incorporated the Barberini family bees into the heraldic system.
  2. 1625–1632Pantheon and St. Peter's Basilica, Rome/Vatican · RomeTo supply the unprecedented volume of gilded bronze, the papacy dismantled bronze from the Pantheon portico ceiling; contemporaries quipped 'what the barbarians did not do, the Barberini did.' Each spiral column was cast in three sections, with bases and capitals cast separately, then hoisted into place at the crossing. Whether Francesco Borromini assisted with structural layout remains disputed by scholars.
  3. 1633–1634Crossing of St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican · VaticanOnce completed, the baldachin became the unavoidable visual focus of the new basilica's interior: fabric-like fringes beneath the entablature and the volute angels above set the papal altar apart from the vast space. It fulfilled the liturgical expression of the Holy Tomb sought since the 16th-century rebuilding of the basilica, and made Bernini the papacy's leading artist.
  4. 1640St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican · VaticanThe baldachin immediately became the model for altar canopies and spiral columns throughout the Catholic world, and together with Bernini's later St. Peter's Square colonnade and the Cathedra Petri forms a single Baroque liturgical landscape. It continued to serve major papal liturgies and is repeatedly discussed as a textbook case of Counter-Reformation visual theology.
