Timeline

  1. -200–200Han dynasty China · Han dynastyChina developed a collar harness distributing draft force across the horse's shoulders, avoiding the breathing difficulties caused by throat harnesses compressing the carotid artery. Han dynasty pictorial bricks and texts show horses could already pull heavier loads, significantly improving agricultural and transport efficiency.
  2. 900–1000Northwest Europe · Western EuropeHorse collar harness technology spread to Europe, gradually replacing the old model dominated by oxen with horses in a secondary role and inefficient harnessing. European craftsmen improved collar materials and structure, enabling horses to take on plowing tasks previously only oxen could perform.
  3. 1100–1300Medieval European farming regions · Central EuropeCombined with heavy moldboard plows and the three-field rotation system, the horse collar harness allowed the heavy clay soils of northwest Europe to be efficiently plowed by horses. Horses were faster than oxen, expanding plowed acreage and increasing grain output, supporting medieval urban and population growth.
  4. 1500Global farming and transport systemsThe collar harness remained the core draft-animal technology until modern agricultural mechanization, spreading worldwide through colonization and trade. Variants can still be seen in modern equestrianism, agricultural exhibitions, and traditional farming regions.
