Timeline

  1. 1666–1677Versailles · Île-de-FranceFrom 1662 Louvois co-signed military affairs with his father Michel Le Tellier; in 1666 he took over the war ministry (the conventional account), gaining full control of the French army's command and supply system. After his father became chief minister on October 27, 1677, he formally served alone as secretary of state for war. He inherited and deepened his father's military-administrative reforms, organizing sieges and field battles in the Dutch War and securing military victories before the Peace of Nijmegen.
  2. 1671–1680Paris · Île-de-FranceIn the 1670s Louvois gradually took charge of military affairs, standardizing battalion and company organization, establishing specialized military engineering and artillery bodies, and improving lines of supply for rations and ammunition. These reforms made the French army one of Europe's most organized military forces, laying the groundwork for subsequent wars of expansion.
  3. 1676–1679Netherlands frontier · Low CountriesFrom 1676 to 1679 Louvois coordinated the actions of the Prince of Condé, Turenne's successors, and others on the Netherlands front, working with Vauban's siege works to capture several fortresses. He advocated achieving the king's territorial ambitions by military means, even at the cost of conflict with Colbert's fiscal retrenchment.
