Timeline

  1. 1270–1271Acre · PalestineAfter Louis IX died of illness and the Eighth Crusade made peace at Tunis, Edward refused to return empty-handed and sailed east via Sicily, reaching Acre in May 1271. By then Baybars had for years been nibbling away at Crusader coastal strongholds, and the remnant Kingdom of Jerusalem was pinned down around Acre.
  2. 1271Qaqun (Qakun) · PalestineWith limited forces, Edward could only raid Mamluk positions around Acre. In November he attacked Qaqun and other places, destroying their works but unable to hold them. Ilkhan Abaqa had promised cooperation, but when a Mongol detachment reached Syria coordination was insufficient and no two-front pincer formed.
  3. 1272Acre · PalestineIn May 1272 Edward and Baybars concluded a truce of about ten years, giving the surviving Crusader coastal towns a reprieve. The agreement recognized Mamluk control of the interior, and the crusade failed to alter the strategic balance.
  4. 1272Acre · PalestineSoon after the truce, an assassin disguised as a petitioner wounded Edward. The prince recovered and left Acre heading west in September. Thereafter Western Europe had no crusade of comparable scale by a monarch, and the fall of Acre in 1291 marked the end of Crusader military presence in the Levant.
