Henry IX, Duke of Bavaria
Henry IX (c. 1075–1126), a member of the Welf family nicknamed 'Henry the Black', was Duke of Bavaria from 1120 to 1126.…
Timeline
- 1121–1124Regensburg · BavariaHenry IX succeeded his brother as Duke of Bavaria in 1120, earning the nickname 'Henry the Black'. He administered his lands in Bavaria and consolidated Welf influence in the south, reaching a political understanding with Lothair, Duke of Saxony, to jointly resist the centralizing policies of the Salian Emperor Henry V late in his reign.
- 1125Mainz · Rhineland-PalatinateAfter Henry V died without an heir in 1125, Henry IX, as leader of the Welf faction, vigorously backed Lothair III in the election at Mainz, causing the Hohenstaufen candidate Frederick II to lose. This consolidated the Saxon-Welf alliance and marked a shift in the imperial succession from the Salians to the Welf–Supplinburg axis.
- 1126Ravensburg · BavariaHenry IX died of illness at Ravensburg on 13 December 1126, and Bavaria passed to his son Henry X ('Henry the Proud'). His descendants' relations with Lothair III subsequently deteriorated, and the hereditary feud between the Welfs and Hohenstaufen intensified further in the 1130s, becoming one of the main axes of medieval German politics.
