Timeline
- c. -1600–900Olmec cultural zone · Gulf CoastSolid rubber balls excavated archaeologically show that peoples had mastered vulcanization by mixing plant juices; the Maya and later civilizations incorporated ball games into creation myths and royal ceremonies, making ball courts communal religious spaces.
- 1421–1430Tenochtitlan and surrounding ball courts · Valley of MexicoSubject states in the tropical lowlands paid tribute of raw rubber and finished balls to the Aztec court; ball courts existed in the capital and allied cities, and rubber products were also used for waterproof containers and tool handles, with the technology spreading through the tribute network.
- 1431–1600Mesoamerica and the Caribbean contact zone · MesoamericaIn the 16th century, the Spanish observed and recorded rubber balls and processing methods, sending samples to Europe; local ball games declined under colonial suppression, but the vulcanization principle independently developed in Mesoamerica was not systematically re-recognized in Europe until modern chemistry.
