- 1520Worms · GermanyUnder pressure from the papal bull Exsurge Domine and the German princes, Charles V decided to convene an Imperial Diet to try the Luther case. Luther set out from Wittenberg for Worms under a safe-conduct, and reformers and conservatives confronted each other directly at the imperial level.
- 1520Worms · GermanyLuther maintained before the Diet that his works must be defended by Scripture and reason, and refused simply to recede. The Diet ultimately failed to achieve religious reconciliation, and the empire subsequently placed Luther outside the law, prompting reform-minded princes to form a political alliance.
