Timeline

  1. 1473–1475Wallachia · RomaniaThe Ottomans supported Radu the Fair's return to the Wallachian throne, replacing his brother Vlad III. Radu's regime paid tribute to the sultan and cooperated with the Ottoman campaign against Moldavia; Wallachia thereby became an Ottoman vassal, and although King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary had supported Vlad, he could not sustain intervention.
  2. 1474–1475Moldavia · MoldaviaMoldavian voivode Stephen III, with Hungarian and Polish support, prepared his forces and in 1475 defeated Sultan Mehmed II's large-scale expedition at Vaslui. This battle kept Moldavia de facto independent during the 1470s and earned praise from the pope, standing in sharp contrast to Wallachia's pro-Ottoman course.
  3. 1476–1477Near Bucharest · RomaniaVlad III regained the Wallachian throne for a third time with Hungarian aid and immediately fought the Ottoman vassal Basarab Laiotă. Vlad was killed between 1476 and 1477, and Wallachia again fell into the hands of pro-Ottoman nobles; the throne passed between Basarab Laiotă and another Basarab, while Ottoman control of the north bank of the Danube was significantly strengthened.
