Timeline
- 1622Roman Curia · Holy SeeOn Epiphany, Gregory XV convened thirteen cardinals to establish the Propaganda Fide, ending earlier failed attempts at temporary missionary committees blocked by resistance from the patronage powers. The June bull granted stable funding, privileges, and a permanent secretariat, allowing the Holy See to bypass the Spanish and Portuguese crowns and directly govern missions in non-Catholic lands.
- 1627–1644Palazzo di Propaganda Fide, Rome · Holy SeeUrban VIII founded the Urban College to train secular clergy from the mission territories and established a multilingual printing press for catechisms and documents. The Palazzo di Propaganda Fide was completed beside the Spanish Steps, giving the congregation a fixed seat, school, and publishing facilities, making it the material center of the Holy See's globalized administration.
- 1640–1715Propaganda Fide, Rome · Holy SeeThe congregation sent papal vicars to the Americas, Asia, and Africa, requiring the use of local languages and the training of local clergy, while adjudicating disputes among religious orders. Dominicans and others lodged complaints with it over Jesuit accommodation strategies in China, bringing the Chinese Rites Controversy into curial procedure and showing it had become the arbiter of global missionary policy.
- 1967Vatican · VaticanTo downplay the modern political connotations of the word 'propaganda,' the congregation was renamed the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in 1967, continuing to oversee numerous mission territories in Africa and Asia. A 2022 curial reform merged it into the new Dicastery for Evangelization, with the global missionary coordination function established in 1622 continuing in the new structure.
