Timeline
- 1185Kypsela · ThraceIn autumn 1185 Asen and his brother Theodore (later known as Peter) sought an audience with Isaac II at Kypsela in Thrace, requesting mountain fiefs in the Balkans; they were refused and humiliated. The brothers returned to Tarnovo and used this as a pretext for revolt.
- 1185–1187Tarnovo · BulgariaAround the feast of St. Demetrius in 1185, the brothers launched an uprising of Bulgarians and Vlachs at Tarnovo. Peter first took the title of tsar, while Asen handled military affairs. In 1186 they briefly fled north across the Danube and brought back Cuman forces; after a prolonged siege of Lovech failed in 1187, Byzantium effectively recognized their regime.
- 1188–1195Tarnovo · BulgariaAround 1187–1188 Asen became Peter's co-ruler, later centering his rule on Tarnovo. In the 1190s he repeatedly raided Byzantine Thrace and the Struma river valley, securing the Second Empire's foothold in the northern Balkans.
- 1196Tarnovo · BulgariaIn 1196 the boyar Ivanko assassinated Asen. Choniates records both Byzantine bribery and a family vendetta as explanations. Peter briefly held sole power before also dying, and the younger brother Kaloyan succeeded, as the Asen dynasty entered its next phase.
