Timeline

  1. 1173–1176Navarre heartland · NavarreAlfonso VIII launched three counteroffensives between 1173 and 1176, successively recovering Bureba, Miranda and other places, and twice penetrating deep into Navarre's heartland. In 1174 Sancho VI was trapped in the castle of Laguardia, and in 1176 the fortress finally fell to Castile, seriously threatening the core of the Kingdom of Navarre.
  2. 1176–1177Westminster · EnglandIn August 1176 the two sides concluded a seven-year truce and jointly requested arbitration by Henry II. The March 1177 ruling required both to return to the 1158 boundaries: Sancho VI returned Logroño and other La Rioja towns but retained control of Álava, Gipuzkoa and Durangaldea; Castile was to pay three thousand maravedís in compensation each year for ten years.
  3. 1179Between Nájera and Logroño · NavarreUnder pressure from the Treaty of Cazola between Castile and Aragon to partition Navarre, Sancho VI and Alfonso VIII signed a peace treaty between Nájera and Logroño, clearly assigning La Rioja to Castile and Gipuzkoa and eastern Álava to Navarre. The treaty no longer mentioned Navarre's vassal obligations to Castile, placing the two monarchs on equal footing.
