Within the alliance, military nobles and priestly elites co-ruled, with coastal salt production and inland cocoa trade as economic mainstays.
  2. 1325–1329Guatemalan Highlands · GuatemalaAt the same time, Maya city-states such as the K'iche' and Kaqchikel in the Guatemalan Highlands maintained independent political traditions, continuing Classic Maya culture through lineage and ritual systems reflected in documents such as the Popol Vuh. The Postclassic Maya world of the 1320s was polycentric, with both trade contact and intermittent conflict between the peninsula alliance and the highland states.
