  1. 1541–1545Riga · LatviaLong-standing rivalry between the Grand Master of the Livonian Order, the Archbishop of Riga, and the Hanseatic city of Riga. In the 1540s Reformation ideas seeped into the cities and dioceses, weakening the Order's authority, while the Confederation's decision-making mechanism struggled to unify foreign policy given divergent interests among its members.
  2. 1542–1548Livonia · Baltic SeaMuscovy's expansion into Eastern Europe, Poland–Lithuania's search for sea access, and Sweden and Denmark's contest over Baltic trade all regarded Livonia as a strategic buffer and potential target for annexation. In the 1540s, the parties probed the Confederation's weaknesses through diplomacy, trade agreements, and border frictions.
