Granada lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in southern Iberia, where the Zirid dynasty founded a taifa kingdom in 1013.…
Timeline
- 1013–1020Granada · Al-AndalusThe Berber Zirid family, taking advantage of the decline of central authority in Córdoba, established themselves in Granada as taifa emirs, building the Albaicín hill settlement and controlling irrigated agriculture in the Sierra Nevada foothills and trade routes to the Mediterranean.
- 1018–1030Granada · Al-AndalusEmir Habus ibn Maksan appointed the Jewish scholar Samuel ha-Nagid as vizier and military commander; poetry and Hebrew literature flourished at the Granada court, and the city's defenses and administrative system were consolidated amid taifa rivalries.
- 1031–1040Granada · Al-AndalusAfter the Caliphate of Córdoba formally dissolved in 1031, taifas proliferated across Iberia; Granada's Zirid taifa maintained its independence through mountain fortresses and Samuel's administration, both fighting and trading with taifas such as Seville and Toledo, while the city's population and crafts continued to grow.
- 1038–1090Granada · Al-AndalusAfter Emir Badis succeeded to the throne he continued to rely on Samuel's family for governance, while wars of consolidation among the taifas intensified; late in the 11th century the Almoravids intervened in Iberia from the Maghreb, ending Granada's Zirid taifa and incorporating the city into the Berber empire.
