Timeline

  1. 1451–1452Vienna · AustriaIn 1451, though nominally king of Hungary and archduke of Austria, Ladislaus was in fact still held as an orphan under the control of his guardian Frederick III (Holy Roman Emperor) and detained in Vienna. Hungarian nobles and Austrian princes, deeply dissatisfied, demanded that Frederick return the king and hand over his guardianship, creating political pressure.
  2. 1452–1455Wiener Neustadt · AustriaIn 1452 Austrian nobles forced Frederick III by arms to release Ladislaus, who finally gained actual control of the Austrian lands. In 1453 he was formally crowned king of Bohemia in Prague and reasserted sovereignty over Hungary, reaching a power-sharing agreement with regent John Hunyadi. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Ladislaus also took part in planning crusade discussions, with limited results.
  3. 1456–1457Prague · BohemiaAfter John Hunyadi's death from illness following the Battle of Belgrade in 1456, Ladislaus had Hunyadi's eldest son László Hunyadi arrested and executed for treason in March 1457, provoking a strong backlash among the Hungarian nobility. That November, Ladislaus suddenly fell ill and died in Prague at only seventeen, leaving no heir. His death directly triggered a succession crisis in Hungary, ultimately leading to Matthias Corvinus being elected new king in January 1458.
