  1. 1041–1044León · LeónAfter being crowned in León in 1038, Ferdinand I in the early 1040s merged the two crowns through his wife Sancha's inheritance rights and his own Castilian base. Aragonese documents in 1041 again styled Ferdinand 'Emperor of León and Castile,' revealing ambitions beyond traditional Leónese suzerainty.
  2. 1045–1048Burgos and Biscay frontier · CastileFerdinand and his brother King Garcia III of Navarre repeatedly clashed over Álava, La Rioja, and traditional Castilian lands south of Burgos. The two faced off through vassals and fortress networks, with frequent small-scale raids and diplomatic maneuvering, accumulating tensions that led to the 1054 Battle of Atapuerca.
  3. 1049–1050Burgos · CastileAround 1047 Ferdinand and Sancha commissioned cultural projects such as a manuscript of the Commentary on the Apocalypse of Beatus of Liébana, while also reorganizing the army and vassal networks. By the late 1040s their power securely controlled the León–Castile core, opening the way for tribute extortion from Muslim taifas and large-scale Reconquista campaigns.
