  1. 1291Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden · SwitzerlandRepresentatives of the three cantons established the Ewiger Bund (Eternal Compact) through the Federal Charter, with each community pledging mutual aid against violence from within and without the valleys, and swearing to confirm earlier compacts. Each canton confirmed it with its seal, forming a political organization with functions of common defense and judicial coordination.
  2. 1291–1300Forest region of Central Switzerland · SwitzerlandAfter the league's founding, the three cantons maintained autonomy amid Habsburg power fluctuations caused by disputes over the German royal title. In 1297 Adolf of Nassau reaffirmed the status of Uri and Schwyz, but after Albert I's accession suzerain pressure rose again, prompting the three cantons to strengthen military cooperation.
  3. 1315–1353Morgarten and Brunnen · SchwyzIn the 1315 Battle of Morgarten the combined forces of the three cantons repelled a Habsburg army, and the same year the Treaty of Brunnen reaffirmed the league. Thereafter Lucerne, Zurich, Glarus, Bern, and others joined in succession; the core league of the three cantons gradually expanded into a larger confederacy, though it always remained at the political-military center.
