Timeline

  1. 1600–1610Kingdom of France · FranceThe French army was the first to call mounted infantry carrying short firearms 'dragoons'. These soldiers used horses for transport, dismounting at designated positions on the battlefield to form infantry lines to engage, fundamentally different from traditional cavalry in fighting style. Their horses were of lower quality, and their pay was lower than that of regular cavalry.
  2. 1621–1630German states and the Low Countries · GermanyDuring the Thirty Years' War, the armies of Sweden, France, the Empire, and the various states all raised dragoon regiments on a large scale. Dragoons carried out reconnaissance, rapid seizure of passes and bridges, and harassment of enemy supply lines. Gustavus Adolphus's Swedish army reforms significantly increased the proportion of dragoons across European armies.
  3. 1650–1700Major states of Western Europe · Western EuropeWith the spread of flintlock muskets and the evolution of cavalry tactics, dragoons gradually abandoned dismounted fighting in favor of mounted shock as their main tactic. By the early 18th century, dragoons in many countries had fully transformed into regular cavalry, standing alongside light and heavy cavalry as one of the main cavalry arms, retaining the dragoon name as a lineage of designation.
