Timeline
- 1501–1514Tabriz · East AzerbaijanIsmail I united the Qizilbash of seven major tribes including Shamlu, Rumlu, and Stajlu, mobilizing tribal cavalry through Twelver Imam Shi'a faith; in 1501 he captured Tabriz and proclaimed the Safavid dynasty. Warriors wore the twelve-fold red cap (taj) as an emblem, forming a military-religious community distinct from Sunni Ottomans.
- 1514–1520Chaldiran · West AzerbaijanIn the 1514 Battle of Chaldiran, Qizilbash light cavalry charges failed to break through Ottoman janissary matchlocks and artillery positions, resulting in a Safavid defeat. Thereafter the tribes remained the main force but began introducing firearms tactics and ghulam slave soldiers, profoundly challenging the traditional tribal charge model.
- 1521–1524Tabriz · East AzerbaijanAfter Ismail's health deteriorated in the 1520s, Qizilbash tribal amirs contested for regency power and fiefs (soyurghal) at court, with Tabriz becoming the center of tribal political rivalry. Between 1521 and 1524 central authority weakened, tribal private armies and local separatist tendencies intensified, laying the groundwork for the long infighting after the young Tahmasp's accession.
- 1524–1530Azerbaijan · AzerbaijanAfter ten-year-old Tahmasp acceded in 1524, Qizilbash tribes still held military and political power. During Suleiman's major eastern campaigns of 1526–1528, Qizilbash organized defenses on the Azerbaijan and Iraq frontiers; the border temporarily stabilized around the 1529 Treaty of Constantinople, but the contradiction between tribal control of the young shah and centralization persisted.
