1025–1044Heian-kyō · Kyoto PrefectureYounger brother of Emperor Go-Suzaku of the same mother, he received a prince's education at court. During his brother's reign he participated in court activities as a prince, in line for imperial succession.
1045–1068Heian-kyō · Kyoto PrefectureHe succeeded after Go-Suzaku's death in 1045; the following year Fujiwara no Yorimichi became sesshō regent. During his reign court government was largely controlled by the Fujiwara clan, the emperor presided over rituals and ceremonies, and Heian aristocratic culture continued to develop.
