Timeline
- 1431–1435Herat · KhwarazmShah Rukh ruled from Herat as nominal sovereign, but provinces such as Samarkand, Fars, and Iraq were divided among his sons. In the early 1430s central control over distant governors weakened, and clan members frequently clashed over taxation, military affairs, and order of succession.
- 1433–1438Samarkand · TransoxianaCrown prince Ulugh Beg long held Samarkand, accumulating military, political, and scholarly resources in Transoxiana and becoming the strongest succession candidate. Disputes with his brothers and uncles over borders, tribute, and troop movements openly challenged the imperial order of succession.
- 1438–1440Core provinces of the Timurid Empire · West AsiaBy the late 1430s, various branches of the royal family repeatedly faced off in arms across Fars, Iraq-i Ajam, and Khwarazm. Though Shah Rukh maintained outward unity, the succession disputes left the empire effectively in a multi-centered state of fragmentation, laying the foundation for the separate Timurid successor states after the 1440s.
