Timeline
- 501–570Mountainous regions of Liaodong and northern Korea · Korean PeninsulaIn the 5th–6th centuries Goguryeo built mountain fortresses on a large scale in the Liaodong hills and the mountains of northern Korea, such as Gungnaeseong and Wandu Mountain Fortress, with walls running along ridges and using cliffs and river valleys as natural barriers. Inside were storehouses, water sources, and garrison camps, forming a network of defensive nodes capable of independent resistance.
- 598–600Mountain fortresses around Liaodong City (present-day Liaoyang) · LiaoningIn 598 Emperor Wen of Sui sent naval and land forces to campaign against Goguryeo; Goguryeo troops resisted step by step along the mountain fortress line, and with the rainy season and raids on logistics forced the Sui army to withdraw. The mountain fortress defense system emphasized scorched earth, holding key routes, and mobile reinforcement, showing a high level of 6th-century East Asian mountain fortress warfare.
