Timeline
- 1451–1455Samarkand · TransoxianaAfter Shah Rukh's death in 1447, Timurid princes contested the succession in Samarkand, Herat, and elsewhere; princes such as Abu Sa'id each held their own territories, the empire's unity could not be restored, and local governors and military commanders grew increasingly autonomous.
- 1455–1458Herat · KhorasanBy the mid-1450s the Timurid Empire had in practice split into multiple polities centered on Herat, Samarkand, and Shiraz; the princes alternated between war and peace, and the nominal overlord at the center could no longer effectively govern the vast realm.
- 1459–1460Safran · TransoxianaIn 1459 Abu Sa'id defeated the Uzbek army led by Abu'l-Khayr Khan at Safran, temporarily consolidating Timurid dominance in Transoxiana, but the pattern of imperial fragmentation was unchanged; local rivalries and external nomadic pressures remained severe.
