Timeline

  1. 1351–1358Nicosia · CyprusThe King of Cyprus still held the title King of Jerusalem, legally continuing the crusader kingdom tradition, but actual control was limited to the island of Cyprus itself, with no military presence in the former lands of Syria–Palestine; the monarchy increasingly depended on Venetian and Genoese commercial support.
  2. 1351–1360Rhodes · Eastern MediterraneanSince occupying Rhodes in 1309, the Knights Hospitaller still used it as their headquarters in the 1350s, maintaining a fleet patrolling the eastern Mediterranean and protecting pilgrims and Christian merchant ships, but facing Ottoman expansion in Anatolia and Byzantine decline, their strategic room for maneuver was steadily shrinking.
  3. 1354–1360Aegean Sea · Aegean SeaVenice and Genoa fiercely competed in the Aegean and around Cyprus; crusader successor states were reduced to pawns in great-power rivalry, and control of eastern Mediterranean trade and military power accelerated toward the Italian commercial republics, further hollowing out the crusader political legacy.
