  1. 1434Dalarna and Bergslagen · DalarnaMiners and peasants of Dalarna and Västmanland, led by Engelbrekt, destroyed Danish-garrisoned fortresses such as Borgånäs and Skövdehus and expelled the officials. The nobility then joined, and the uprising grew from tax resistance in the mining districts into a nationwide anti-union movement.
  2. 1435Arboga · VästmanlandThe enlarged realm assembly convened at Arboga, where nobles, church, and town representatives elected Engelbrekt rikshövitsman and admitted some rebel leaders to the council of the realm. Eric promised reforms in exchange for a truce.
  3. 1435–1436Central Sweden to Stockholm · SwedenEric failed to deliver on promises of tax reductions and replacing the officials, and the rebels took up arms once more. The Arboga assembly resumed in early 1436, and the council set the king a deadline to correct his course; in April a rebel force marched on Stockholm, which still supported the king.
  4. 1436Island in Lake Mälaren · Lake MälarenEngelbrekt was assassinated by the noble Mans Bengtsson while crossing Lake Mälaren. Nobles and churchmen instead elected Karl Knutsson commander, and assemblies with peasant representatives were held at Uppsala and elsewhere. Danish power was temporarily driven from most of Sweden, and the cohesion of the Kalmar Union was severely damaged.
