  1. 1298–1300Niani (capital of the Mali Empire) · MaliAfter Mansa Wali, Sundiata's son, and his brother Wati died in succession, serious disputes arose within the Keita royal family over the legitimate heir. Court ministers, military leaders, and provincial governors each backed different royal members, and central control over Saharan trade routes and southern goldfields began to decline.
  2. 1301–1304Mali imperial court · MaliAbu Bakr I (called 'Caliph' in Arabic sources) took the throne with the support of military factions and purged opposing nobles. Later historians such as Ibn Khaldun recorded his rule as violent, further alienating the royal family and local strongmen, leaving administrative ties to the empire's west and Timbuktu intermittent.
  3. 1305–1307Entire Mali Empire · West AfricaCourt turmoil intensified late in Abu Bakr I's reign, and he ultimately fell in a coup or assassination, succeeded by Abu Bakr II. Years of succession struggle did not dissolve the imperial framework but drained central military and fiscal resources, creating the political backdrop for Mansa Mūsā's mid-14th-century restoration of prestige through pilgrimage and displays of gold.
