Huygens' Pendulum Clock Patent
In 1656-1657, Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens designed and commissioned the world's first practical pendulum clock, cutting daily timekeeping erro…
Timeline
- 1656The Hague · NetherlandsBuilding on Galileo's research into the isochronism of the pendulum, Huygens designed a clock mechanism regulated by a pendulum, converting the pendulum's periodic motion into gear train motion via an escapement, achieving timekeeping accuracy far surpassing contemporary hourglasses, water clocks, and spring-driven clocks.
- 1657The Hague · NetherlandsHuygens commissioned The Hague clockmaker Salomon Coster to build the first physical pendulum clock according to his drawings, after which he obtained patent protection issued by the States of Holland. Huygens published Horologium in 1658, detailing the principles of the pendulum clock, and the technology soon spread to major clockmaking centers across Europe.
