Timeline

  1. 1508–1509Vatican Apostolic Palace · VaticanJulius II entrusted his private study and library to Raphael for decoration. The four walls of the room corresponded to theology, philosophy, poetry, and law; the School of Athens occupied the philosophy wall, facing the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament, forming an iconographic program of faith and reason.
  2. 1509–1511Vatican Stanza della Segnatura · VaticanRaphael painted an arcaded perspective on the semivaulted wall; Plato points upward holding the Timaeus, while Aristotle extends his hand holding the Ethics, surrounded by Pythagoras, Euclid, Ptolemy, and other philosophers. The architectural space and rhythm of the figures became a model of harmonious composition in the High Renaissance.
  3. 1513–1550Vatican Stanza della Segnatura · VaticanAfter completion, the fresco remained on its original wall. By the mid-16th century, art historical writing already regarded it as a representative work of the High Renaissance; later drawings, prints, and academic teaching repeatedly copied its central group and perspective hall.
