  1. 1290–1292Buda · HungaryAfter King Ladislaus IV of Hungary was killed by the Cumans before 1290, the nobles elected Andrew III to the throne. Due to his maternal lineage, some nobles questioned the legitimacy of his claim and supported Charles Robert (of the Angevin family of Naples) as a rival monarch. Andrew III consolidated his rule in Buda, quelling early rebellions through force and compromise.
  2. 1293–1300Western Hungarian frontier · HungaryIn the mid-to-late 1290s, Andrew III continued to wage war against noble oligarchs such as Matthew Csák and the Aba clan, attempting to recover vast territories held by them. In 1291 he signed a treaty with Duke Albert I of Austria, demarcating the western border in exchange for a brief peace. Although the crown could not fully subdue the oligarchs, it maintained the basic unity of the kingdom until Andrew III's death in 1301.
