Timeline
- 1091–1098Yongle Fortress and the Hengshan area · HengshanDuring the Shaosheng era, Zhang Dun directed an aggressive northwestern policy, building forts and contesting key points in the Hengshan region, fighting Western Xia repeatedly. Though some lost territory was recovered, battles such as Yongle Fortress were enormously costly, and border forces and grain supplies remained under constant strain.
- 1092–1100Hebei Circuit · HebeiAlthough peace was maintained after the Chanyuan Treaty between Song and Liao, key Hebei towns such as Zhending and Dingzhou still required heavy garrisons. Liao reinforced the border and probed it; Northern Song's Hebei guards were numerous but declining in combat effectiveness, with commanders long posted to frontier commands and troop quality falling.
- 1095–1100Bianjing · BianjingNorthern Song's imperial guards exceeded one million, with enormous costs garrisoning the capital and the circuits. Repeated cuts under Yuanyou and re-expansion under Shaosheng destabilized the system; the ratio of frontier to interior garrisons was unbalanced, and arrears of pay and provisions were common, spreading the military crisis into state finance and politics.
