Dutch Water Line
A defensive inundation system of breached dikes along the Zuiderzee to the southern river network, first fully used in 1672 to halt Louis XIV's advan…
Timeline
- 1672Muiden to Gorinchem line · North HollandAfter French and Münster-Cologne forces penetrated the Republic's heartland and Utrecht fell, Holland abandoned the neglected 1629 fortification plan; in mid-June the army was ordered back behind the inundation zone from Muiden on the Zuiderzee via Woerden, Schoonhoven, to Gorinchem. Field Marshal Wirtz and others opened sluices and breached dikes; peasants at one point drained the flood at night, and authorities enforced water levels by military order.
- 1672–1673Naarden-Woerden-Gorinchem corridor · NetherlandsThe inundation zone was about three to five kilometers wide, with ditches hidden under turbid water, making it hard for infantry, cavalry, and heavy guns to deploy; the French were kept out of Holland's core. In late December 1672 severe cold made the ice fordable and the French briefly tried to cross the line, but the offensive halted after the thaw. While the navy pinned the English at sea, the Water Line held Amsterdam on land, key to the Republic's survival in the Disaster Year.
- 1673–1678Gorinchem and the key to the southern river network · South HollandAfter the French withdrawal, the Republic upgraded the temporary breaches into a permanent defense system: dredging sluices, repairing city walls, and garrisoning high ground and dike nodes, linking fortresses like Muiden, Naarden, and Gorinchem with controllable inundation. After the 1678 Treaty of Nijmegen, the Old Dutch Water Line became a fixed component of Holland's territorial defense and was further reinforced in the 18th century.
