Timeline
- 1099–1103Oslo · NorwayYoungest son of Magnus III, he was only four when his father died on an expedition to Ireland in 1103. Following the Norwegian tradition of dividing the realm among brothers, he jointly inherited royal power with his brothers Sigurd and Eystein, receiving the southern territories and assisted by regents from the court nobility.
- 1101–1110Tønsberg · VestfoldFrom 1101 to 1103 he was an infant heir; after 1103 he nominally participated in the three-way co-rule. While Sigurd campaigned in the Holy Land from 1107 and Eystein governed the east, Olaf grew up at the court in southern Norway and gradually took part in ceremonial royal activities. His real power was limited, but the co-ruling structure allowed Norway to maintain an appearance of unity under the brothers' division of labor.
