Timeline

  1. c. 1380–1440Kingdom of Hungary · HungaryIn the late 14th century, the Kingdom of Hungary recruited Serbian and Romanian border cavalry to form light cavalry units called hussars (Hussar, said to be named for one cavalryman per twenty households). They carried single-handed curved blades rooted in Eastern European steppe tradition, the direct prototype of the early Hungarian sabre, blending Kipchak, Serbian, and Ottoman weapon elements.
  2. 1441–1456Hungarian–Balkan front · BalkansJános Hunyadi (c. 1406–1456) led Hungarian forces to repel Ottoman invasions repeatedly; the mobile warfare of hussars armed with Hungarian sabres played a key role in many border battles, and practical combat needs drove further refinement of blade curvature, edge length, and guard design.
  3. 1456Belgrade · SerbiaIn July 1456, Ottoman sultan Mehmed II besieged Belgrade with some 100,000 troops. Hunyadi led Hungarian forces and crusader volunteers, outnumbered, to successfully lift the siege. The mobile counterattacks of hussars armed with Hungarian sabres proved decisive, greatly delaying Ottoman penetration into Central Europe; Hunyadi fell ill and died shortly after the battle.
